Veterinarians at the Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom used magnetic resonance images to obtain measurements of dorsopalmar and mediolateral hoof shape of 100 horses and compared these measurements with those obtained of the same hooves using conventional X-rays.
A recent National Equine Health Survey (NEHS) revealed that 38% of horses taking part were recorded as suffering from health problems and one-third (32.9%) were categorized as lame.

Two farriers, Lee Collins and Peter Day, recently co-authored a paper that was published in The Journal of Equine Veterinary Science. The paper, which is titled “The Effect on Tungsten Road Nails on Locomotor Biomechanics in Horses Moving on Tarmac Surface,” examines how road nails impact the horse’s movement symmetry.
Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College’s Structure and Motion Laboratory in the United Kingdom examined the effects of three common hacking surfaces (asphalt, gravel and grass) on foot placement, movement symmetry and hoof impact deceleration during the walk and trot.
New research conducted by the Animal Health Trust in collaboration with Rossdales Equine Hospital reveals that 1 in 10 horses or ponies might develop at least one laminitic episode each year. This occurrence makes laminitis just as common as colic. And just as colic can happen during any season, the study has identified that there is no “safe” period from laminitis, as reported by Phys.org.
