Kip Kaupua (Pearl City, Hawaii)
Kip is a farrier of Hawaiian descent. He’s been shoeing horses across the Hawaiian islands for 30-plus years. Kip took me on as an apprentice last year and gave me a chance to learn despite my lack of experience or education and farrier science. Due to his physical condition/wear and tear from his work, Kip is nearing the end of his career, but still has years of good work left in him. I’d like to show my appreciation to him for teaching me at least enough to find my own clients. The farrier industry in Hawaii is not highly respected, most likely due to uneducated horse owners, but the few farriers who are working in Hawaii are very knowledgeable and have high demands and high expectations from people who show too little appreciation. The photo I have attached is the only one of Kip I have, and you will see a fellow farrier Max, as well, who is younger and also learned from Kip.
