Christina Mendoza-Green (Ooltewah, Tenn.)
Christina is a barefoot trimmer who took on my horse’s founder case after another provider recommended euthanasia due to a combination of rotation, sinking, medial-lateral imbalances and pedal osteitis. She took the time to speak to me and my barn manager about how we could support Roman with correct diet and lifestyle changes, as well as walked me through how she was “reading” my horse’s hooves during his monthly appointments. She started trimming his hooves to promote better lamellar connection and encourage sole growth, and sized him for supportive booties to wear when needed. Even when I was anxious and emotional about the outcome of his case, Christina maintained a calm, positive, and confident attitude that has set the tone for this chapter of Roman’s rehabilitation story. I appreciate how committed she has been to thoroughly educating herself on hoof care and how she also takes the time to educate her clients so we can feel involved and empowered during the rehabilitation process and beyond; I can understand the “why” behind my horse’s trims. She is passionate about her clients getting a proper diet and appropriate exercise, and stresses the importance of working patiently with the hoof to find better balance. Not only has Christina drastically improved Roman’s quality of life (he’s like a different horse), but she has also taught me an invaluable lesson: getting back to the basics can change everything.
