The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is hiring a farrier for the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Urbana, Illinois at Midwest Equine in Farmer City, Illinois.

The farrier will perform therapeutic trimming and shoeing of client and University of Illinois-managed horses at Midwest Equine and off-site at related farm calls. In collaboration with the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, the farrier will provide comprehensive equine care and instruct students in equine medicine and surgery.

Duties and responsibilities include clinical service, participating in research with university faculty, performing scholarship outreach and service maintenance, such as cleaning the shop, trucks and maintaining inventory. Clinical service includes therapeutic shoeing on both conscious and anesthetized horses, teaching farrier techniques to students, performing lameness exams with veterinarians, providing services for clinic horses used for teaching and research, as well as record keeping.

Minimum qualifications for this position include a high school diploma or GED and at least 2 years work experience as a farrier. Certified Journeyman Farriers are preferred but not required. This is a full-time civil service position appointed on a 12-month basis.
