American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
A: I don’t offer multi-horse discounts for a variety of reasons:
1 My safety and chances of being hurt are the same whether I trim one or more than one horse at the same location.
2 My insurance costs don’t change nor do the costs of my tools, planning for capital expense purchases, marketing, repairs and maintenance on my vehicle and the cost of shipping for supplies I order.
3 My time still costs the same. This is my full-time job and I need to be paid.
4 As a female, I am always asked to reduce my fees. I work hard to project a professional image, but some think that if my husband works full-time, this is just a hobby and I don’t really need the money.
5 My customers receive ‘perks’ that replace a multi-horse discount. I let my customers know whether I see something going on with their horse that their veterinarian should know about. If the customer talks to me about their horse and its issues while riding, I will film the horse in an arena at various gaits and show them where their horse is hurting and discuss what to talk to their vet about.
If the client isn’t home when I trim/shoe, I bring the horses in from the pasture…
