Chattanooga, Tenn., is usually associated with American railway history. However, in late February 2009, the city was all about horses when it hosted hundreds of shoers attending the 38th Annual Convention of the American Farrier’s Association.

Over 5 days, farriers gathered for camaraderie, contests, entertainment and education.

Beefing Up Security

Dan Burba, a Louisiana State University equine veterinarian, delivered a presentation on biosecurity measures for farriers. Because we live in a mobile world, diseases have never been more easily transportable. The professor of equine surgery illustrated how vigilance by all involved at barns, racetracks, veterinarian hospitals and other facilities is essential for biosecurity measures.

“The key is cooperation in the practice and systems established,” explains Burba. “Biosecurity isn’t always the notions of gates, guns and guards. You must make people aware and put them into action.”

The MarketPlace gave attendees the opportunity to inspect trustworthy familiar instruments, as well as the latest tools. If you would like to read about the hoof-care innovations that decorated the exhibit hall, read Technical Editor Red Renchin’s recap in the April issue of American Farriers Journal. He covers everything from hydraulic nippers to software to shoe racks.
