Learning to use the Internet will help you become a more informed and profitable farrier

Although we live in an uncertain world, there are a few guarantees. One that you can bet the rent money on is unrelenting change. Unless you have been in a coma during the past decade, you are aware of the amazing advances of technology.

We are using gadgets that Ian Fleming’s Q could have never created for James Bond. One of these innovations is the Internet. Although some farriers are reluctant to incorporate the Web into their businesses, for others it is as integral to business as anvils and hand tools.

No one was born knowing how to trim and shoe horses. Likewise, becoming proficient with the Internet and computers takes time and effort. I feel that if you truly want to be a competitive and successful farrier, these skills are increasingly necessary.

Where To Begin

The first decision you have to make is what type of computer you need. Do you work best while in your home office? A desktop is a good choice. Do you travel often and desire portability? A laptop may be for you. Or if you want the ultimate in portability and compactness, there are many options for personal digital assistant devices, such as a BlackBerry or Apple’s iPhone.

Another thing to consider is what operating system you prefer. Between the two most popular options, Microsoft Windows and Mac, the former is the most widely used. For comparable hardware, Macs typically are more expensive. Also, you have more software options with a Windows machine.
