Scottish Farrier Stops Steven Beane Streak At Four In World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition

They're often called blacksmiths because they work with iron. They usually call themselves farriers or horseshoers. Whatever you call them, David Varini of Dalry, Ayrshire, Scotland, is the 2013 World Champion. He first came to the Calgary Stampede's World Championship Blacksmiths' Competition (WCBC) presented by Mustad in 2004, Varini remembers, and then didn't return until 2008. That year, he was Reserve Champion.

Topeka Zoo, Farrier Treating Giraffe For Laminitis

Jesse, a 23-year-old giraffe at the Topeka Zoo, is experiencing health issues suggesting his long life may be coming to an end, Topeka city officials said Wednesday. Jesse, who is one of the oldest male giraffes currently living among zoo populations, is experiencing front hoof problems, as well as some muscle atrophy in his neck and arthritis in his rear legs that makes it hard for him to lie down and get back up.
